Do You Need an llms.txt File? Separating AI Search Hype From Reality

Most small businesses do not need an llms.txt file. Google has confirmed it does not use the file, and real-world testing has found little measurable effect on AI traffic.

Most small businesses do not need an llms.txt file. Google has directly confirmed that Google Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode, does not use llms.txt files, and independent testing has found little to no measurable effect on AI referral traffic from adding one.

What llms.txt is supposed to do

llms.txt is a proposed (not an official industry) standard — a plain-text file placed at a website’s root that lists key pages in a simplified format, intended to help large language models find a site’s main content more easily. It is sometimes compared to a sitemap, but it is not a recognized web standard and adoption by AI companies has been limited.

What Google has actually said

Google has been unusually direct about this one. In mid-2025, Google’s John Mueller stated plainly that "no AI system currently uses llms.txt" [1](https://www.seroundtable.com/google-ai-llms-txt-39607.html). In 2026, Google formally updated its AI optimization documentation to state that Google Search does not use AI text files, markup, or Markdown files like llms.txt, and that creating one "won’t harm (nor help) your visibility or rankings" [2](https://searchengineland.com/google-says-llms-txt-files-wont-harm-or-help-your-search-rankings-480264). Mueller separately compared it to the old, long-deprecated keywords meta tag in terms of practical usefulness [3](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-says-llms-txt-comparable-to-keywords-meta-tag/544804/).

What independent testing has found

A tracked study across 10 websites in different industries compared AI crawl activity and AI-referred traffic before and after adding llms.txt. Eight of the ten sites saw no measurable change, and the two sites that did see AI traffic increases had other explanations — such as PR coverage — happening in the same window, not the file itself [4](https://searchengineland.com/does-llms-txt-matter-467740).

Are there any legitimate reasons to add one?

  • It is low-risk: Google has confirmed it does not hurt rankings or visibility
  • Some AI tools or internal company systems may reference it in the future as standards evolve
  • It can double as internal documentation of your most important pages

These are minor, optional benefits — not reasons to prioritize it over core SEO and AI visibility work.

Where your time is better spent

  • A complete, accurate Google Business Profile
  • Clear, specific website content that directly answers customer questions
  • Fast, mobile-friendly pages with accurate titles and descriptions
  • Genuine reviews and mentions on credible third-party sites

Next steps for your business

  1. Skip paying extra for an "AI-optimized" llms.txt setup as a standalone service
  2. Redirect that budget toward content clarity, site speed, and your Business Profile
  3. Revisit this topic periodically, since AI company practices are still evolving
  4. Verify any new AI SEO claim against a primary source before acting on it
